Click here to listen to audio exhibition guide

Let's take a look at the Kariomon coffee ceremony that takes place in Ethiopia, a part of Africa where coffee has been drunk since at least 1,000 years ago. This event, which is mainly conducted by women, is a very important event in Ethiopian society. The "Kari" from "Kariomon" means "coffee", while the "omon" part refers to "being together". This ceremony is part of the lives of Ethiopian people and facilitates communication, similar in some respects to Japanese tea ceremonies. Indeed, communicating with others over coffee could be described as a concept that is shared around the world.
